JOB TITLE

In-house Solicitor (1-3 years PQE) - Business Assurance

Based in Edinburgh (flexibility available)

Fiona Beal (In-house Counsel)

JOB PURPOSE

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a junior solicitor to join our in-house legal team (part of the firm's wider Business Assurance function).

You will work on a wide range of in-house matters including commercial contracts, regulatory issues, legal practice and risk management. The in-house function also supports our Abu Dhabi office.

You will work closely with In-house Counsel, the Head of Business Assurance and other colleagues in the Business Assurance team. The work is varied and you will have the opportunity to work with different colleagues across the firm including lawyers and business services colleagues, as well as liaising with third parties such as regulators, external clients and suppliers.

You will have 1 - 3 years' experience in legal regulation and general commercial contracts work. Experience in risk management and data protection is desirable. Additional training will be provided as required.

CORE TASKS

With the appropriate level of supervision and guidance you can expect to be involved in the following:
  • Regulatory matters (ensuring compliance with Law Society of Scotland and SRA requirements)
  • Keeping abreast of changes to law and regulation and supporting the business to make the necessary changes to comply
  • Legal practice (how we "do" law); supporting business improvement initiatives
  • Risk management; supporting risk management committee
  • Drafting and amending policies and procedures
  • Working with the Internal Business Assurance team (quality assurance, internal audit)
  • Legal research
  • Client engagement and experience generally
  • Reviewing and negotiating client contracts; supporting Bids team
  • Reviewing and negotiating supplier contracts (supporting the Procurement Manager)
  • Claims and complaints
  • Data protection
  • Training - inputting into firm-wide programme; developing and delivering regulatory awareness and training programmes
  • Supporting the Abu Dhabi office in the above (as applicable)

PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • Interest and enthusiasm for in-house work within a law firm and want to have a wider understanding of the practices, commercial drivers, and business needs of all areas of our business (both legal services and business services) so that you can better serve our internal clients
  • Able to take a pragmatic and commercial approach to their work
  • Quick learner and with an enquiring mind; takes personal responsibility to learn on the job and keep knowledge up to date
  • Understands internal clients' needs and can tailor advice appropriately
  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently, adapting style appropriately to audience
  • Excellent attention to detail
